In the past, a hysterectomy was the way most doctors got rid of precancerous growths. Today, most doctors will try not to do surgery first. Instead, they will try to freeze or burn the growth off of the cervix. This is best when done for growths that are caught early. For growths that are more risky, a hysterectomy may be the best option.
For cancer growths, there are several ways to treat it. Some women will do best with radiation and chemotherapy. Some women may do better with a hysterectomy. A hysterectomy may be the only way to stop the cancer from spreading to other organs. You and your doctor should talk about what is best for your situation.
