Kidney Cancer Statistics: Lifetime Risk

Based on rates from 2000-2002, 1.22 percent of men and women (1 in 82 men and women) born today will be diagnosed with kidney cancer at some time during their lifetime. These statistics are called the lifetime risk of developing kidney cancer. Sometimes it is more useful to look at the probability of developing kidney cancer between two age groups. For example, 0.75 percent of men will develop kidney cancer between their 50th and 70th birthdays, compared to 0.37 percent of women.

Kidney Cancer Statistics: Prevalence

On January 1, 2002, in the United States, there were approximately 499,199 men and women alive who had a history of kidney cancer -- 130,654 men and 90,616 women. This number included any person alive on January 1, 2002, who had been diagnosed with kidney cancer at any point prior to January 1, 2002, people with active disease, and those who had been cured of their disease.
