Irinotecan Constipation

Most people receiving irinotecan (Camptosar®) for the treatment of colon or rectal cancer will likely experience some type of side effect with this drug. For example, clinical trials have shown that one of the common problems with irinotecan is constipation. Not only is this a common problem, but it can lead to serious complications.
If you develop abdominal (stomach) cramping, swelling, fullness, or constipation while using irinotecan, make sure to contact your healthcare provider right away. Also, your healthcare provider needs to know if you have problems with constipation, a bowel obstruction (intestinal blockage), or inflammation (colitis) before you can begin treatment with this chemotherapy drug.
(For more details, click Irinotecan Side Effects. This article takes a closer look at other possible side effects, including how often they occurred in clinical trials.)
