Drug Interactions With Irinotecan

Echinacea
Echinacea can make irinotecan less effective. This is because echinacea is thought to stimulate the activity of the immune system, while irinotecan reduces the activity of the immune system. Do not take echinacea during irinotecan treatment without first speaking with your healthcare provider.

Eltrombopag
Eltrombopag may increase blood levels of irinotecan, possibly increasing the risk for side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to lower your irinotecan dose if you use these medicines together.

Live Vaccinations
Live vaccines are vaccines that contain live viruses or bacteria. If you receive a live vaccine during irinotecan treatment, you may become infected with the virus or bacteria from the vaccine. Also, live vaccines may be less effective in people receiving irinotecan. Talk to your healthcare provider before receiving a vaccination while you are undergoing chemotherapy.

P-glycoprotein (Pgp) Inducers
P-glycoprotein is a protein in the body that helps remove substances, such as medications, from the tissues in the body so they can be removed through the urine or feces. Pgp helps remove irinotecan from the body. Certain other medications called Pgp inducers increase the activity of Pgp.

Using irinotecan with one of these Pgp inducers causes irinotecan to be removed from the body too quickly, potentially making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely if you combine irinotecan with a Pgp inducer.

P-glycoprotein (Pgp) Inhibitors
P-glycoprotein is a protein in the body that helps remove substances, such as medications, from the tissues in the body so they can be removed through the urine or feces. Pgp helps remove irinotecan from the body. Certain other medications called Pgp inhibitors decrease the activity of Pgp.

Using irinotecan with one of these Pgp inhibitors causes irinotecan to be removed more slowly, potentially increasing the amount of irinotecan in your blood and increasing your risk for serious side effects. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely for side effects if you combine irinotecan with a Pgp inhibitor.
