Imatinib Dosage

Imatinib tablets are generally taken once or twice a day, with food and a glass of water. People who have trouble swallowing tablets can dissolve them in water or apple juice, provided the mixture is drunk right away. Your imatinib dosage will depend on your particular situation, which includes the type of cancer being treated, your age, and height and weight (for children).

An Introduction to Dosing With Imatinib

The dose of imatinib mesylate (Gleevec®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The reason you are taking the medication
  • Your age
  • Your height and weight (in children)
  • How you respond to imatinib
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be taking.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Imatinib Dosage for Leukemia

The standard dose of imatinib for adults in the chronic phase of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is 400 mg a day. The standard dosage for adults in the accelerated phase, or blast crisis, is 600 mg a day. Your healthcare provider may increase this amount to 600 mg (in the chronic phase) or 800 mg (in the accelerated phase or blast crisis) if you are not adequately responding to treatment and are not experiencing serious imatinib side effects. The standard dosage of imatinib for adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is 600 mg a day.

The standard imatinib dosage for children with CML or AML is based on the child's body surface area, which is calculated using the child's height and weight. Children should not receive more than 600 mg a day.

Doses of Imatinib for Other Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders

The standard dosage of imatinib for the treatment of other blood cell diseases, including myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative diseases, aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM), and hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES), is 400 mg a day. People with certain forms of ASM or HES may be started on 100 mg a day and increased to 400 mg a day if imatinib is well tolerated and a higher dosage is needed.
