Imatinib and Uterine Cancer

Healthcare providers can prescribe
imatinib mesylate (Gleevec®) for cancers affecting the blood, bone marrow, skin, and digestive tract. These include:

  • Leukemia and related cancers of the blood and bone marrow
  • A rare type of skin cancer known as dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans
  • A rare type of gastrointestinal cancer called gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).
  •
Studies have examined using imatinib to treat other types of cancer, including thyroid, ovarian, and prostate cancer. Unfortunately, based on the study results, it appears to be ineffective for ovarian and prostate cancer. It has not been examined at all as a treatment for uterine cancer.
