Histrelin Implant Side Effects

Other Possible Side Effects

Histrelin implants have been studied extensively in clinical trials in adults and children. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using a histrelin implant were carefully documented. As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other groups.
In these studies, common side effects of histrelin implants in adults included:
  • Hot flushes -- in up to 65.5 percent of people
  • Reactions at the implant site -- up to 13.8 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 9.9 percent
  • Testicular atrophy (shrinking of the testicles) -- up to 5.3 percent
  • Enlarged breasts -- up to 4.1 percent
  • Impotence (erectile dysfunction or ED) -- up to 3.5 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 3.5 percent
  • Insomnia -- up to 2.9 percent
  • Headaches -- up to 2.9 percent
  • Weight gain -- up to 2.3 percent
  • Decrease libido (sex drive) -- up to 2.3 percent.
Common reactions in children included:
  • Skin reactions at the implant site -- in up to 51.1 percent of children
  • Scarring at the implant site -- up to 6.4 percent
  • Problems with the stitches at the implant site -- up to 6.4 percent
  • Pain -- up to 4.3 percent
  • Irregular uterine bleeding -- up to 4.2 percent
  • Breast swelling and tenderness -- up to 2.1 percent
  • Painful, heavy, or prolonged menstrual periods -- up to 2.1 percent
  • Nosebleeds -- up to 2.1 percent
  • Headaches, including migraine headaches -- up to 2.1 percent
  • Weight gain -- up to 2.1 percent
  • Mood changes -- up to 2.1 percent
  • Flu-like symptoms -- up to 2.1 percent.
Skin reactions at the implant site usually resolved within two weeks of receiving the implant. In clinical studies, these reactions included the following:
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Soreness
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Tingling
  • Itching.
