Histrelin Implant Dosage

The standard dosage of histrelin implants for men with advanced prostate cancer is one 50-mg implant that releases 50 mcg of histrelin each day for 12 months. When treating precocious puberty in children, the standard dose is one 50-mg implant, which releases 65 mcg daily for 12 months. These implants must be removed after one year of use.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Histrelin Implant

The standard dosage of the histrelin implant (Supprelin® LA, Vantas®) will vary, depending on which condition is being treated (precocious puberty or prostate cancer). As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Histrelin Implant Dosing for Prostate Cancer (Vantas)

The usual histrelin implant dosage in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer is one implant every 12 months. Each Vantas implant contains 50 mg of histrelin and provides a continuous release of 50 mcg per day for one year, plus an additional few weeks to allow for flexible scheduling of the next dose.

Histrelin Implant Dosing for Central Precocious Puberty (Supprelin LA)

The usual dose of the histrelin implant for treating central precocious puberty (early puberty in children) is one implant every 12 months. Each Supprelin LA implant contains 50 mg of histrelin and provides a continuous release of 65 mcg per day for one year, plus an additional few weeks to allow for flexible scheduling of the next dose.

The histrelin implant is inserted by a healthcare provider as part of a minor surgical procedure. After numbing the arm, the healthcare provider will make a small incision (a cut). The implant will be inserted under the skin through this incision. The incision will then be closed with stitches, special surgical tape, or both.

The implant must be removed after one year, at which time a new implant can be inserted. The implant can also be removed at any time if treatment needs to be stopped. It is generally recommended that treatment with a histrelin implant end before age 11 in girls and age 12 in boys to allow for normal puberty to occur.
