Histrelin Implant and Breastfeeding

There is no reason for women to use histrelin implants (Supprelin LA, Vantas) while breastfeeding, as this product is only approved for men with prostate cancer and children who begin puberty too soon. It is not known if this drug would pass through breast milk or harm a nursing infant. Women should not use this medication while nursing.

Can Breastfeeding Women Use Histrelin Implants?

Histrelin implants (Supprelin® LA, Vantas®) are prescription medications that contain histrelin, a synthetic (manufactured) form of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). The implant is inserted under the skin of the arm, where it remains active for one year.
It is unknown if histrelin passes through breast milk. The medication is not recommended for use in women who are breastfeeding.

More Information on Histrelin Implants and Breastfeeding

No research has been done to see if histrelin passes through breast milk. Therefore, it is unknown if the medication could potentially harm a nursing child. It is also unknown if this drug would alter breast milk supply. However, the medication decreases estrogen levels in the body, so it could have an effect on breast milk production.
Histrelin implants are only approved for use in men with prostate cancer and children with central precocious puberty (a condition in which puberty starts earlier than normal). Therefore, it is unlikely that the medication would be necessary for a woman who was breastfeeding.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and histrelin implant use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
