Green Tea Dosage

There is no standard green tea "dosage" because the tea comes in numerous forms, including beverages and dietary supplements. Since different green tea supplements may contain different amounts of the active components of green tea, you should follow the dosing instructions provided on the label of your particular product. Some sources recommend doses of green tea ranging from 1 to 10 cups per day.

An Introduction to Green Tea Dosage

It is difficult to recommend a "dosage" for green tea, since green tea is taken in so many different forms (in beverages, as extracts, or in various supplements). These different forms may contain drastically different amounts of the active components of green tea. Also, even if this was not a problem, the safest and most effective doses for green tea have not been scientifically established yet.

Reasonable Green Tea Dosing

Sources often recommend doses of green tea ranging from 1 to 10 cups per day. Keep in mind that green tea contains caffeine, about 10 to 80 mg per cup. A modest approach, such as including a few cups of green tea into the daily diet, is probably best. Many of the studies suggesting various health benefits of green tea are based on green tea consumption in Asian countries, about 3 cups per day.

Since different green tea supplements may contain different amounts of the active components of green tea, it is reasonable to follow the dosing instructions provided on the label of your particular product. Be sure to note the caffeine content of such products.

General Information on Dosing for Green Tea

Some considerations for people taking green tea include:

  • Since the manufacturing of supplements (such as green tea tablets or capsules) is not closely regulated, it is important to choose a trustworthy manufacturer for green tea supplements. It is a good idea to look for the "USP" symbol, since this means that the supplement has been tested and contains the right ingredients in the right amounts.

  • If you are sensitive to the effects of caffeine (or if you already consume a lot of caffeine), it is probably best to start with a very low dose of green tea.

  • If you have any chronic health problems or take any prescription medications, it is probably a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before taking green tea.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or green tea dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider.
