Gliadel Dosage

Gliadel comes as wafers that are implanted in the cavity that remains after a brain tumor is surgically removed. The specific dosage of Gliadel that your healthcare provider uses will depend on the size of the space left in the brain after the tumor is removed. However, no more than eight wafers can be implanted during each surgery.

An Introduction to Dosing With Gliadel

The dose of Gliadel® (carmustine implant) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on the size of the space left in the brain after your tumor is removed.

What Is the Recommended Gliadel Dosage?

The usual recommended dose of Gliadel for the treatment of malignant glioma and glioblastoma multiforme is eight wafers implanted into the cavity that remains after a brain tumor is surgically removed. If the cavity is too small to hold eight wafers, as many wafers as possible should be used to cover as much of the cavity as possible. However, no more than eight wafers should be implanted during each surgery.

Each Gliadel wafer contains 7.7 mg of carmustine (the active ingredient). This means the maximum recommended dose per surgery is 61.6 mg.

General Information on Receiving Gliadel

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Gliadel include the following:

  • This medication comes in the form of a small wafer that is placed in the brain during surgery to remove a tumor.

  • Gliadel wafers are placed along the floor and sides of the cavity created in the brain after a tumor is removed.

  • Up to eight wafers can be placed at a time to cover as much of the cavity as possible. The wafers can overlap slightly. They can also be broken in half, but should not be broken into more than two pieces.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your Gliadel dosage, please talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
