Clinical Effects of Fludarabine

Fludarabine has been studied in trials that included people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia who had been treated previously with at least one treatment regimen that included an alkylating agent (a certain class of chemotherapy medicines).
In these studies, 13 percent of people treated with fludarabine were considered to have a complete response, which means leukemia cells were no longer detectable in their blood and bone marrow, and their blood cell counts had returned to normal. Response to treatment lasted a median of 65 to 91 weeks (the median is the middle number, where half of people did better, and half did worse).
The studies also looked at survival. In one study, people lived a median of 43 weeks with fludarabine treatment. In another study, people lived a median of 52 weeks.

When and How to Use This Medicine

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with fludarabine include the following:
  • This medication is given as an injection through a needle inserted into a vein (an intravenous, or IV, injection). It is usually given daily, for 5 days in a row, every 28 days.
  • Fludarabine injections are normally given by a healthcare provider in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital or clinic.
  • Each injection is usually given over about 30 minutes.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed. It is important to keep your appointments to receive your fludarabine doses.
