Estramustine Side Effects

Possible side effects of estramustine include breast enlargement, an upset stomach, and certain liver problems. This prescription medication can also cause blood clots, infections, or allergic reactions, which will require immediate medical attention. Because it can be difficult to predict whether you will develop problems with this drug, contact your healthcare provider if you develop anything that does not seem right.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Estramustine

As with any chemotherapy medicine, estramustine phosphate (Emcyt®) can cause side effects. In fact, most people will experience some type of reaction to this drug, and some side effects can be quite significant. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways to prevent or lessen reactions to this medicine.

Serious Estramustine Side Effects

Some side effects of estramustine are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
    • Numbness or weakness on one side of the body or the face
    • A sudden, severe headache
    • Sudden confusion or problems speaking or understanding
    • Problems with walking, coordination, or balance
    • Partial or complete loss of vision
  • Signs of a blood clot in the lung, such as:
    • Sudden shortness of breath
    • Cough
    • Chest pain
  • Redness, swelling, pain, or tenderness in an arm or leg, which could be signs of a blood clot
  • Pain, pressure, or discomfort in the chest
  • Swelling of the hands, legs, ankles, or feet
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Dark, bloody, or tarry stools
  • Vomiting blood
  • Signs of infection, such as:
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Signs of liver problems, such as:
    • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
    • Dark urine
    • Pale stool
    • Upper-right abdominal (stomach) pain
  • An increase in blood pressure
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
