Estramustine for Prostate Cancer

Men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer may receive estramustine phosphate (Emcyt®) as part of their chemotherapy treatment. Although this prescription medicine is not a cure for this disease, it can help relieve symptoms of prostate cancer.

Estramustine is reserved for use when the cancer has become worse or has spread to other areas of the body (metastasized). It can help relieve a number of prostate cancer symptoms, such as:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping the flow of urine
  • Weak urine flow
  • Not being able to urinate at all
  • Blood in the urine or semen.

By combining estradiol (a form of estrogen) and a chemotherapy medicine, estramustine works by interfering with cell division, which helps prevent cancer cells from multiplying. The estradiol helps stop the production of male hormones, which prostate cancer cells need to grow.
