Cancer and Estramustine

Men who have prostate cancer may receive estramustine phosphate (Emcyt®), a chemotherapy medication that is reserved for use in men whose cancer is progressing or that has spread to other areas of the body. It comes in the form of a capsule that is taken three or four times daily.

Estramustine is made up of a combination of estradiol (a form of estrogen) that has been chemically linked to nornitrogen mustard, a chemotherapy medicine. It works in two ways to stop the growth of cancer cells. The chemotherapy portion works by interfering with cell division, which helps prevent cancer cells from multiplying. The estradiol helps stop the production of male hormones, which are needed by prostate cancer cells to grow.
