Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and Erlotinib

There are two main types of lung cancer: small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is the more common type. Erlotinib (Tarceva®) is used in people with this condition whose disease has not spread or grown after four cycles of treatment with certain types of chemotherapy known as "platinum-based" chemotherapy (such as cisplatin or carboplatin). This is known as maintenance treatment.

People with non-small cell lung cancer whose disease has progressed or spread after treatment with at least one chemotherapy medication may also be prescribed erlotinib. This is known as second- or third-line treatment.
