Emend Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
Emend is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Astemizole (Hismanal)
Emend should never be taken with astemizole, as life-threatening reactions may occur. While astemizole has been withdrawn from the market in the United States, it may be available in other countries.
Certain Antibiotics or Antifungals
Some antibiotics and antifungals can increase the level of Emend in your blood, increasing your risk of
Emend side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
Certain Benzodiazepines
Emend can increase the level of some benzodiazepines in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to decrease your benzodiazepine dosage.
Cisapride (Propulsid)
Emend should never be taken with cisapride, as life-threatening reactions may occur. While cisapride has been withdrawn from the market in the United States, it may be available in other countries.
Corticosteroids
Emend can increase the level of corticosteroids in your blood. Usually, your healthcare provider will recommend a lower dose of the corticosteroid.
Diltiazem
Diltiazem can increase the level of Emend in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking diltiazem and Emend together.
Oral Contraceptives
Emend may make
oral contraceptives (
birth control pills) less effective, increasing your chance of pregnancy. You should use a back-up method of contraception (such as condoms) during treatment with Emend and for one month after the last dose of Emend.
