What Is Dasatinib Used For?

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (sometimes called acute lymphocytic leukemia, or ALL) is a rapidly progressing leukemia in which the bone marrow produces a large number of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). The lymphocytes crowd out the healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. As a result, infections, anemia, and bleeding may occur.
ALL is the most common type of leukemia in young children, but it can also affect adults. The Ph chromosome is also found in people with ALL.
Dasatinib is approved for people with Ph chromosome-positive ALL that was resistant to other medications. It is also used for people who cannot tolerate other leukemia medications.

How Does This Medicine Work?

Protein kinases are proteins found in the body that regulate cell function, including cell growth. Dasatinib works by reducing the activity of BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, a type of protein kinase that causes the growth of leukemia cancer cells. By reducing BCR-ABL activity, dasatinib slows down the growth of leukemia cancer cells.

Can Children Use Dasatinib?

This medication has not been adequately studied in children. It is only approved for use in people 18 years of age and older. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using dasatinib in children.

Is It Safe for Older Adults?

Dasatinib can be used in older adults. In clinical studies, older adults responded as well to the medication as younger age groups. However, older adults are more likely to experience dasatinib side effects and may need to be monitored more closely.
