Dasatinib Side Effects

Most people who take dasatinib will experience some type of side effect. Some of the most common reactions to this drug include fatigue, bleeding, and fluid retention. While reactions such as these are typically minor, there are some potentially serious complications that require immediate medical treatment. Notify your healthcare provider right away if you develop any signs of an infection, problems speaking, or chest pain.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Dasatinib

Just like any medicine, dasatinib (Sprycel®) can cause side effects. Like other cancer medications, the side effects can be significant. Although not everyone who takes the medication will have problems, most people will experience some type of side effect during dasatinib treatment. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways to manage these side effects.

Serious Dasatinib Side Effects

Some side effects of dasatinib are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of infection, such as:

 

 
  • Shortness of breath or a new or worsening cough
  • Problems speaking, confusion, or a severe headache
  • Weakness or numbness of an arm or leg
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Black, tarry, or bloody stools
  • Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • An irregular, fast, or forcefully beating heart
  • Chest pressure or pain
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Extreme tiredness or fatigue
  • Swelling in the body or sudden weight gain
  • Severe diarrhea or diarrhea that does not go away (see Chemotherapy-Induced Diarrhea)
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
