What Is Cetuximab Used For?

Can Children Use It?

Cetuximab is not approved for use in children. At this time, it is unknown if the medicine is safe or effective in children, as it has not been adequately studied in this group. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the particular benefits and risks of using cetuximab in children.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Older adults can use this medicine. In clinical trials involving people with colorectal cancer, older adults appeared to respond to and tolerate cetuximab no differently than younger age groups. However, cetuximab has not been adequately studied in older adults with head and neck cancer. In general, older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication.

Is Cetuximab Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this product for something other than the uses discussed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. Cetuximab may be used off-label to treat non-small cell lung cancer. It has been studied for the treatment of ovarian cancer and pancreatic cancer, but at this time cetuximab appears to be ineffective for these uses.
