CeeNU and Breastfeeding

As with many medications, studies have not been performed to determine the effects of using CeeNU (lomustine) while breastfeeding. Therefore, it is unknown whether the drug passes through breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing infant. Due to the potentially serious risks associated with this chemotherapy medication, the manufacturer does not recommend women breastfeed during CeeNU treatment.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take CeeNU?

At this time, it is unknown if CeeNU® (lomustine) passes through breast milk in humans. Therefore, if you are currently breastfeeding a child, talk to your healthcare provider before taking this medication.

More Information About CeeNU and Breastfeeding

CeeNU has not been adequately studied during breastfeeding. Therefore, it is unknown if the medication passes through breast milk, or if it would potentially harm a nursing child. While the lack of information is certainly frustrating, it is important to understand that studies of medications are rarely done in breastfeeding women, as doing so would usually expose an infant, who will not directly benefit from the medication, to potentially serious risks.

CeeNU is associated with potentially serious side effects, such as lung damage and reduced blood cell counts. The risk for these side effects in a nursing child cannot be ruled out until more information is known about CeeNU and breastfeeding. For these reasons, the manufacturer recommends that women not breastfeed while taking the drug.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and CeeNU use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
