Vismodegib Drug Information

A healthcare provider may prescribe vismodegib (ErivedgeTM) to help in the treatment of a certain type of skin cancer known as basal cell carcinoma. Specifically, this medicine is used when the cancer has come back after surgery, has spread to other parts of the body (metastasized), or cannot be treated using surgery or radiation.

Vismodegib works by interfering with cancer cell growth and survival. It does this by binding to specific proteins that occur in a pathway (called the hedgehog pathway) that is active in signaling skin cancer cell growth. By binding to these proteins, vismodegib prevents the proteins from activating other proteins that are needed for cancer cells to grow.

Although it may be an effective chemotherapy medication, not everyone can use this drug. Information on vismodegib should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before taking it to help ensure a safe treatment. For instance, you should not use this medicine if you have certain allergies or if you are pregnant.
