Velcade Medication Information

Adults who have certain types of cancer may receive a prescription medication called Velcade® (bortezomib). Specifically, this drug is approved for treating multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) and mantle cell lymphoma (a type of cancer of the white blood cells). It comes as an injection that is given by your healthcare provider.

As a type of proteasome inhibitor, Velcade works by blocking the action of proteasomes (proteins found inside healthy and cancerous cells). This causes certain proteins to accumulate within the cancer and healthy cells, causing the cells to die.

Before receiving Velcade, make sure to review the safety information with your healthcare provider. For example, it may be dangerous to use this medication if you are pregnant, have low blood pressure, or have certain problems with your kidneys or liver.

(Click Velcade for more information on this medication, including how it works, details on its safety and effectiveness, and potential side effects.)
