Recognizing the Signs That Death Is Near

When the Time Has Come

As you recognize the signs that death is near, it may be time to gather your family and friends to say goodbye to their loved one. Taking the time to hold their hand, talking to your loved one, or just sitting next to him or her can give your loved one a feeling of support, calmness, and love. This is a chance for family and friends to express their love and care for the person and each other.

It's also important to have a plan for what to do after death, as being prepared can help lighten some of the load. Death brings an emotional burden for many people, so having a plan already in place can help keep you from becoming overwhelmed. For some people, having a hospice team can help to give that support needed during the grieving time. If you choose not to use hospice, talk to the doctors and nurses available about what to do after death occurs.

Knowing some of the signs that death may be near can help you to spend those last moments with your loved one to the fullest. Also, knowing how to help your loved ones when you see these signs can be a source of comfort and care for them in their final moments.
