Pentostatin Drug Information

A healthcare provider may recommend chemotherapy treatment with pentostatin (Nipent®) in adults who have a certain type of cancer known as hairy cell leukemia. This prescription medicine works to slow down the progression of the disease by interfering with the replication process of DNA. This action can slow down the growth of cancer cells, or even cause the cancer cells to die.

While this can be an effective drug for many people, pentostatin is not suitable for everyone. Your healthcare provider will review information on your medical history and all other medications you are taking before determining whether this form of chemotherapy is right for you. For example, people who have problems with their kidneys, lungs, or liver may not be able to safely use it.

Most people who receive treatment with pentostatin will develop some type of side effect. Clinical studies have shown that nausea, vomiting, and fatigue are some of the most commonly reported problems.
