Irinotecan Drug Information

A healthcare provider may prescribe irinotecan (Camptosar®) to help in the treatment of colon or rectal cancer in adults. It is used when the cancer has metastasized, meaning the cancer has spread to other areas of the body. This drug can be used alone or in combination with other chemotherapy medications.

Irinotecan works by blocking topoisomerase I, an enzyme that helps relax DNA that has been overwound (such as when DNA is duplicating so it can divide). This enzyme helps break the DNA strand to relieve the strain, and then helps put the strand back together. However, when irinotecan binds to topoisomerase I, it prevents the enzyme from repairing the broken DNA strand and the cell dies.

Although it may be an effective medication, not everyone can use this drug. Information on irinotecan should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to help ensure a safe treatment. For instance, you may not be able to use this medicine if you are taking certain medications or have lung disease.
