Degarelix Drug Information

A healthcare provider may prescribe degarelix (Firmagon®) to treat advanced-stage prostate cancer. Degarelix comes as an injection that forms a small mass (depot) under the skin after it is injected under the skin of the abdomen (stomach). This mass gradually releases the medication over a 28-day period.

This drug works by blocking certain enzymes, which ultimately lowers the amount of testosterone made by the testes. This slows down the growth of prostate cancer cells (which need testosterone to grow and multiply) in men with prostate cancer.

Before starting treatment with degarelix, make sure to review the drug's safety information with your healthcare provider. For example, you may not be able to use this medicine if you have certain allergies, heart disease, or osteoporosis. Also, this product may react with certain other medications.
