Actiq Lozenge Information

Available only by prescription, Actiq® (fentanyl lozenge) is a drug approved for treating breakthrough cancer pain (sudden bursts of pain that "break through" regular pain medication). Actiq contains a strong opioid narcotic and is only approved for use in people who are already accustomed to the effects of opioid medications.

Actiq comes in the form of an oral lozenge that is used on an "as needed" basis. However, do not use more than two lozenges for each breakthrough pain episode, and do not use this medication more often than four times a day.

Before using this lozenge, it is important to review Actiq's safety information carefully. For instance, this medicine does carry a high potential for abuse and may not the best choice for those who have had any problems with alcohol or drug abuse in the past. Also, because this medication is particularly dangerous in the case of an overdose, seek immediate medical care if you have used too much Actiq.

(Click Actiq for more information on this medication, including exactly how it works, important safety precautions and warnings, possible side effects, and what to do in cases of overdose.)
