18 Essential Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Cancer Treatment

Post-Treatment Questions

While it may be difficult to think too far ahead in your treatment, here are some questions that you may want to ask about what to expect after your treatment sessions:

  • Will I be able to drive after having radiation therapy or chemotherapy, or will I need someone to drive me?
  • What are the possible side effects of cancer treatment?
  • Which side effects are potentially serious and would require immediate medical attention?
  • What are the long-term complications of cancer treatment?
  • How can I prevent or manage any side effects?
  • Will treatment affect my ability to have children?

Some of the after-effects of cancer treatment may be a factor regarding which option you will use. For example, if you are young and want to have children, there may be a number of other treatment options that you want to consider first before doing some of the more aggressive therapies.

Feeling Comfortable Talking With Your Doctor

Being able to feel comfortable talking to your healthcare provider is important. You should feel like you can ask him or her anything in regard to your cancer and treatment options. Cancer can be quite overwhelming, so it's important to feel like you can communicate well with your doctor to get what you need.

Not only is communication important, but you should also feel at ease with your doctor. This may take a little time. However, make sure to let your questions and concerns be known. Also, your doctor should take the time to answer your questions. If he or she is rushing you out the door, you may want to consider whether this particular doctor is right for you -- remember, a good relationship with your doctor is a two-way street.

You will likely have more than one doctor. You very well may have a whole team of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals taking care of you. Try to get as much information from these people as you can, as it can help you feel more confident and secure in your choice for treatment.
