Cabazitaxel Dosage

For men with prostate cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment with cabazitaxel, dosing recommendations will be based on several factors. Some of these factors include your weight and height, and how you respond to the medication. Before receiving your infusion, your healthcare provider will give you a steroid to help prevent allergic reactions.

An Introduction to Dosing With Cabazitaxel

The dose of cabazitaxel (Jevtana®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on factors such as:

  • Your height
  • Your weight
  • How you respond to the medication.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Cabazitaxel Dosage for Prostate Cancer

Your healthcare provider will base your cabazitaxel dose on your body surface area, which is calculated using your height and weight. If you develop dangerous side effects of cabazitaxel, your healthcare provider may need to lower your dosage and/or delay future treatments. The medication is typically given once every three weeks.

Cabazitaxel is approved only for use in combination with oral prednisone tablets. The dosage in this situation is prednisone 10 mg once a day, every day, during the entire treatment period, even in between cabazitaxel doses.

To prevent allergic reactions, you should receive a corticosteroid, an antihistamine, and an H2 antagonist intravenously at least 30 minutes before each dosage of cabazitaxel. Your healthcare provider may also give you antinausea medications.

General Information on Receiving Cabazitaxel

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with cabazitaxel include the following:

  • The IV is given over a period of one hour. However, the entire process (including giving the various medications before your cabazitaxel infusion) will take much longer.

  • Chemotherapy works best if you can receive it on schedule. However, if you develop serious side effects, your treatments may need to be postponed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to dosing with cabazitaxel, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
