Bladder Cancer Treatment

The Importance of Follow-up Care

Follow-up care after treatment for bladder cancer is important even when there are no longer any signs of cancer. Bladder cancer can recur if undetected cancer cells remain somewhere in the body after treatment.

Follow-up care (if the bladder was not removed) entails:

  • A cystoscopy to remove any new superficial tumors that are found
  • Urine tests to check for signs of cancer
  • Blood tests, x-rays, or other tests.

During follow-up care, doctors will need to monitor their patient's recovery and check for recurrence of the cancer. Checkups help to ensure that any changes in the patient's health are noted and treated if necessary. Between scheduled visits, patients should contact their doctor if they experience any health problems.
