Generic BiCNU

No generic BiCNU (carmustine) products are available at this time. Although this medicine no longer has patents that protect it from generic competition, companies have not yet decided to manufacture a generic version of this drug. It is not exactly clear why this is the case, although it may be because the demand for this product is too small for it to be profitable.

Can I Buy Generic BiCNU?

BiCNU® (carmustine) is a prescription medication used to treat certain brain and blood cell cancers. It belongs to a group of chemotherapy medicines known as alkylating agents.

BiCNU is made by Ben Venue Laboratories, Inc., or Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Ltd., for Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. It is an older medication, and is no longer protected by patents. However, BiCNU is not available in generic form.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

Because BiCNU is no longer protected by patents, a generic manufacturer could make a generic version of it. However, at this time, no generic manufacturer has chosen to do so.

It is not entirely clear why a generic version of this drug is not being made. It could be that the demand for the medicine is too small for a generic manufacturer to profit from making a generic version. Because it is unclear why a generic manufacturer has not chosen to make a generic form of BiCNU, it is difficult to predict when, or even if, a generic version will become available.

Is Carmustine a Generic BiCNU?

No -- carmustine is the active ingredient in BiCNU, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.

Carmustine is also available as Gliadel® (carmustine implant). Gliadel is implanted directly into the brain to treat certain brain tumors.
