BiCNU Drug Interactions

BiCNU may decrease the amount of digoxin absorbed from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which could make digoxin less effective. This interaction is less of a concern with liquid forms of digoxin. If you take digoxin tablets during BiCNU treatment, your healthcare provider may need to monitor your digoxin blood levels and possibly switch you to liquid digoxin to reduce the risk of this interaction.
Echinacea may decrease the effectiveness of BiCNU. Do not take echinacea during BiCNU treatment without your healthcare provider's approval.
Live Vaccinations
In general, people on BiCNU should not receive live vaccines (vaccines that contain live viruses or bacteria). Because you are more susceptible to infections during BiCNU treatment, you could become infected with the virus or bacteria used to make the vaccine. Also, live vaccines may be less effective in people using BiCNU. Talk to your healthcare provider before getting a vaccination during BiCNU treatment.
Melphalan may increase the risk for lung damage from BiCNU. Make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you develop breathing problems, such as shortness of breath or a new or worsening cough, during BiCNU treatment.
BiCNU can make sipuleucel-T less effective. This is because sipuleucel-T is thought to work by stimulating the body's immune system, while BiCNU decreases the activity of the immune system. Talk to your healthcare provider about this possible interaction before using these medicines together.

Final Thoughts

It is possible that not all drug interactions with BiCNU were discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider about the specific interactions that may apply to you.
