BiCNU and Breastfeeding

There is little information available on using BiCNU (carmustine) while nursing, so it is unknown if the drug passes through breast milk or if it would harm a nursing infant. However, based on the properties of the drug, it is expected that it would pass through breast milk. Due to the potential risks, the manufacturer recommends women not breastfeed during BiCNU treatment.

Can Breastfeeding Women Use BiCNU?

At this time, it is unknown if BiCNU® (carmustine) passes through breast milk in humans. The manufacturer of the medication recommends that women should stop breastfeeding during BICNU treatment. Therefore, if you are currently breastfeeding a child, talk to your healthcare provider before receiving this medication.

More Information About BiCNU and Breastfeeding

There is very little information available on BiCNU and breastfeeding. This is because the drug has not been adequately studied in women who were nursing. Therefore, it is unknown if the medication passes through breast milk, or if it would potentially harm a nursing child. However, based on the properties of the drug, it is expected to pass through breast milk to some extent.
While the lack of information is certainly frustrating, it is important to understand that studies of medications are rarely done in breastfeeding women, as doing so would usually expose an infant, who will not directly benefit from the medication, to potentially serious risks.
BiCNU is associated with potentially serious side effects. Because the risk for these side effects in a nursing child cannot yet be ruled out, it is generally recommended that women being treated with BiCNU not breastfeed.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and BiCNU use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
