Altretamine Side Effects

In clinical studies, some of the most common side effects of altretamine included fatigue, loss of appetite, and vomiting. Most people who use this chemotherapy drug will develop some type of side effect. Fortunately, there are some recommendations your healthcare provider can suggest to help lessen these reactions. Seek immediate medical treatment if you develop potentially serious problems like hallucinations or severe vomiting.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Altretamine

As with any chemotherapy medicine, altretamine (Hexalen®) can cause side effects. In fact, most people will experience some type of reaction to this drug, and some side effects can be quite significant. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways to prevent or lessen reactions to this medicine.

Serious Altretamine Side Effects

Some side effects of altretamine are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Severe or persistent nausea and vomiting
  • Signs of an infection, such as:
    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Aches and pains
    • Sore throat
    • Painful urination
 
  • Signs of anemia, such as:
    • Extreme weakness
    • Unusual tiredness
    • Pale skin
    • Shortness of breath
    • Dizziness
 
  • Any unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Black, tarry, or bloody stools
  • Changes in mood, such as:
 
  • Clumsiness
  • Difficulty with normal movements, such as walking, talking, or swallowing
  • Feelings of numbness, tingling, or burning, especially in the arms, hands, legs, or feet
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Seizures
  • Confusion, or difficulty thinking or concentrating
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • A decrease in the amount you normally urinate
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
