Generic Aloxi

At this time, there are no generic Aloxi products available. As soon as the first patent for the drug expires in April 2015, however, a number of companies are expected to begin manufacturing a generic version of it. However, circumstances could arise to extend the exclusivity period of the medication beyond 2015, which could delay the production of generic Aloxi.

Generic Aloxi: An Overview

Aloxi® (palonosetron hydrochloride) is a prescription nausea and vomiting medication. Specifically, it is used for the prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or surgery.

Aloxi is made by MGI Pharma, Inc. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Aloxi from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Aloxi Be Available?

The first patent for Aloxi currently expires in April 2015. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version of the drug could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend the exclusivity period of the medication beyond 2015. This could include such things as other patents for specific Aloxi uses or lawsuits. Once the patent expires, several companies will likely begin manufacturing a generic Aloxi drug.

Is Palonosetron a Generic Aloxi?

No -- palonosetron is the active ingredient in Aloxi but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of any drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
