Generic Actiq Lozenges

If your healthcare provider prescribes
Actiq® (fentanyl lozenge) for your breakthrough cancer pain, you may be wondering if there is a generic version available. All of the patents for this pain medication have expired, and generic Actiq lozenges are available at this time.

Generic Actiq, sold under the name fentanyl lozenge, is available in all of the same strengths as the brand-name drug. This generic product is made by several different companies, including:

  • Danbury Pharmacal, Inc.
  • Mallinckrodt Brand Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that all of the generic versions of Actiq currently available are equivalent to Actiq. However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.

(Click Generic Actiq for more information, including how the FDA determines whether a generic is as good as the brand-name drug.)
