Abstral Safety Warning

What Are the Abstral Dosing Warnings?

The initial Abstral dosage should always be 100 mcg, even in people who have been taking other fentanyl-containing medications. Doses of Abstral should not be considered equal to doses of other fentanyl medications. In addition, Abstral should not be substituted for any other fentanyl product, as doing so may result in an overdose.

This medication should not be used more often than prescribed. Once a breakthrough pain episode is treated with Abstral, two hours must pass before another episode can be treated, even if pain is still present.

Are There Special Requirements for Obtaining Abstral?

Yes -- because of the serious risks associated with Abstral use, it is only available through a special program called the Abstral Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). Healthcare providers who prescribe Abstral, pharmacies that dispense it, and people who take it must all be registered with the program. Your healthcare provider and pharmacy will help you with the program registration.

Final Thoughts
