Abiraterone acetate (
Zytiga™) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of certain types of
prostate cancer that has metastasized (spread to other parts of the body), sometimes called advanced or late-stage prostate cancer. It is used in combination with
prednisone.
Just like any medicine, abiraterone may cause side effects.
However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
Common side effects of abiraterone include but are not limited to:
- Joint swelling and discomfort
- Muscle aches
- Fluid retention (edema)
- Hot flushes.
