The standard dosage of abiraterone for men who do not have liver problems is 1000 mg once daily. This medicine is also combined with 5 mg of prednisone that is taken twice daily at different times than abiraterone. This is because abiraterone must be taken on an empty stomach, while prednisone must be taken with food.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of AbirateroneThe dose of abiraterone acetate (Zytiga™) your healthcare provider recommends may vary, depending on whether you have liver problems or develop liver problems during treatment. As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Abiraterone Dosing Guidelines for Prostate CancerThe standard abiraterone dose for late-stage prostate cancer is 1000 mg once a day. Abiraterone is given in combination with prednisone 5 mg twice a day.
The standard abiraterone dosage for late-stage prostate cancer in people with moderate liver impairment is abiraterone 250 mg once a day. This medicine should not be used in people with severe liver impairment.
If liver damage occurs during treatment with this medication, treatment should be temporarily stopped until liver function tests return to normal. At that time, abiraterone may be restarted at 750 mg once a day. If liver damage recurs, the drug should be stopped until liver function improves, and restarted at 500 mg once a day. Abiraterone should be discontinued permanently if liver damage occurs at the 500-mg dosage.
While once-a-day dosing is generally recommended, your doctor might recommend twice-a-day dosing -- essentially doubling your normal total daily amount -- if you need to take certain other medications that tend to lower blood levels of abiraterone (see Drug Interactions With Abiraterone). If you stop taking the other interacting medication, your doctor should put you back on a normal, once-a-day abiraterone dosage.
