Abiraterone Brand Name

A healthcare provider may prescribe abiraterone acetate (sold under the brand name Zytiga™) to adult men who have advanced prostate cancer that has spread to other areas of the body (metastasized).

This medication comes in the form of a tablet and is taken once daily in combination with prednisone. Abiraterone works by reducing the amount of testosterone produced in the adrenal glands and in the prostate cancer cells. Testosterone stimulates the growth of prostate cancer cells. Therefore, by decreasing testosterone levels, abiraterone can help to slow down the growth of cancer cells.

There are currently no generic versions of abiraterone available, as this medication is protected by patents and exclusivity rights until February 2014. Brand-name abiraterone (Zytiga) is made by Patheon, Inc., for Centocor Ortho Biotech, Inc.
